Keyboard Basics for Kids

Step 1: Learn the Concept

A computer keyboard is your main tool for talking to computers and writing amazing stories! Most keyboards use the "QWERTY" layout, named after the first six letters on the top letter row. Keyboards have special helper keys: the long Spacebar adds space between words, the big Enter key starts a new line, and Backspace erases mistakes. See our visual map in the Finger Guide Tool.

Notice how the keyboard is split into rows: the top Number Row (1 to 0), the Top Letter Row (QWERTY), the Home Row in the middle (ASDF JKL;), and the Bottom Row (ZXCVBNM).
